Inner Aikido
"At the beginning of Aikido, you must understand
that you are standing between heaven and earth"
Sugano Sensei quoting O'Sensei
Beyond this physical reality, this quote introduces our two main working axes as a School.
Heaven and Earth are part of every teaching from Sugano Sensei but in our Global Inner Aikido
School we emphasise the "inner" aspect of Aikido or the perception and the attention towards
what's occurring inside of us during the practice.
What's behind the Heaven and Earth concepts?
Heaven – Mindfullness – Sense of Self – Study – Verticality
Through meditation, concentration practice and attentive study of our body movement and positions,
we develop another perception of Aikido. If only concentrating on the physical aspects of Aikido,
we will soon meet our physical limits. If we change our perception through attentive and intensive
study, than our relation to the practice evolve and physical limits become learning points.
The spiritual part of Aikido practice is coming from being in contact with the three essential human
qualities according to Sugano Sensei (respect, consideration and generosity). When we practice those
while doing Aikido we lessen the tension in our contacts and we contribute to Peace and Harmony on Earth.
Earth – Body– Openness to the other – Friendship – Horizontality
Practicing hand techniques and bokken techniques we are trained to coordinate our movement to the rhythms
of the attack, according to the distance to the partner and his moving speed. Each movement becomes a study
of oneself leading other(s).
This practice evolves ultimately to reinforce the friendship bonds between practitioners.
